HOW DO WE CARE FOR OUR COWS?
We live on 26 acres, mixture of pasture and woods. Our cows have access to pasture 24/7, we rotational graze. We have a small cow barn where they can take shelter from the weather at their choosing. This barn also serves to house our hay to keep it dry. We offer hay inside the barn up off the ground. This provide mold free hay for our cows and eliminates waste during winter season when hay is needed.
When they are in milk and go into the stanchion for milking, we provide beet pulp, AVC, sunflower seeds, alfalfa, and oats. We buy all ingredients individually, this way we can adjust ingredient as needed. We do not offer them a commercialized pre-mixed product. When possible all ingredients are sources organically. We make every effort to reduce our family's exposure to glyphosate and other chemicals. What goes into a cow will make its way into the milk.
We use herbal tinctures, homeopathic's and Bach flowers (flower essences) to care for our cows. At times when needed to save the life of a cow we would use conventional means but it is absolute last resort. We have a wonderful farm veterinarian that is mobile and comes to our farm when needed. Thankfully we have never needed to administer antibiotics. We watch our cows closely for any changes in behavior and attempt to address it with herbs, Homeopathic or Bach flowers (flower essences).
PLEASE NOTE: We do not feed our animals GMO products, EVER! We also do not feed our cows mixed dairy rations with oils and questionable ingredients, we do not offer minerals or electrolytes that contain aspartame or saccharin (these do exist!),....at all!! Instead we offer a mixed mineral blend and thorvine kelp, free of neurotoxins.
HOW DO WE MILK OUR COWS?
We choose to use a milk machine. There is much debate on this subject but we have found that the milk we bought from people that used machines lasted longer then those that hand milked. This is just our experience over the course of almost 20 years. We have a milk house, where a milk machine is set up. Our milk house has electric and water along with a vacuum pump system built by grandpa. We are able to quickly and easily clean up and sanitize the system.
WHAT TYPE CONTAINERS DO YOU USE FOR THE MILK?
Milk will be provided in plastic jugs. This makes it easier for families to not worry about returning their bottles. It also helps our family with organization and coordinating pickups. Over the years when we bought from other farmers, we chose to transfer our milk to glass bottles as soon as we arrived home. We highly reccomend this practice to our customers.
